DESCRIPTION
This 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T coupe was modified under prior ownership with the installation of a Mopar 440ci big-block V8 and a 1970-style grille. The seller purchased the car in 2004, and it was subsequently repainted in metallic blue and retrimmed in black vinyl upholstery. Under current ownership, the engine was rebuilt, overbored, and fitted with a stroker kit to displace 496ci. The engine features FiTech fuel injection, a forged crankshaft, forged pistons, a Lunati hydraulic camshaft, Edelbrock cylinder heads, an Edelbrock intake manifold, MSD electronic ignition, Hedman exhaust headers, and a TTi dual exhaust system. Other equipment includes a 46RH four-speed automatic transmission, Sure Grip differential, black-accented hood, black vinyl roof, a formal rear window, subframe connectors, front disc brakes, Weld 15″ wheels, power steering, aftermarket air conditioning, Rallye gauges, and an updated radio.
Forged pistons H-beam connecting rods Edelbrock Performer RPM cylinder heads Lunati 226°/234° hydraulic camshaft Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold Chrome rocker covers MSD electronic ignition Melling timing chain Melling high-volume oil pump Hedman Hedders ceramic-coated exhaust headers Tubular Technologies Inc. 3” dual exhaust system with H-pipe FiTech Go EFI 4 fuel injection was adapted in 2018. The car’s chassis number indicates that it was originally powered by a 340ci V8.
The prior owner installed the 440ci V8 in this vehicle. The seller tells us that the engine was rebuilt in 2011, when it was bored .040″ over and fitted with a stroker kit with a forged crankshaft, yielding a displacement of 496ci and a 10.25:1 compression ratio. Components include:
Finished from the factory in Hemi Orange (EV2), the car was stripped to bare metal around 2010, and the lower portions of the quarter panels and the outer rear wheel wells were replaced with sheetmetal from Auto Metal Direct, as were the floor pans and the trunk floor, according to the seller. Epoxy primer was then applied followed by sanding primer, and the vehicle was refinished in PPG two-stage urethane metallic blue.
The roof has a black vinyl covering and an SE-style small rear window. A 1970-style grille has been installed, and other equipment includes a black-accented Rallye hood, hood-securing pins, simulated side scoops, a body-color fuel cap, and dual side mirrors with chrome housings. The coupe also has chrome bumpers, quad headlights, and quad exhaust outlets. Chips and dings are noted in the paint, and the power antenna does not work.
Weld Racing Rodlite 15″ wheels are mounted with Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires measuring 235/70 in front and 275/60 at the rear. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums, and the steering also is power assisted. Subframe connectors have been welded in, and the suspension was rebuilt in 2006, the seller tells us.
The front bucket seats were reupholstered in black vinyl around 2012, when the dash pad was retrimmed and the carpeting was replaced. The interior features a center console and woodgrain trim accents. The aftermarket air-conditioning was rebuilt in 2014 and utilizes a Sanden compressor and R134a refrigerant. An updated radio plays through four replacement speakers. The dome light and the clock do not work.
A Tuff-style steering wheel sits ahead of Rallye instrumentation consisting of a 150-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and a combination gauge containing readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature, amperage, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 30k miles, approximately 1,500 of which were added under current ownership. The seller states that the odometer reading is not accurate, and true mileage is unknown.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a later-model 46RH four-speed automatic transmission and a Sure Grip limited-slip differential in a “742” case rear end. Corrosion is noted on underbody components.
